Support Groups

In keeping with its mission to educate the whole child and his/her family, the Center offers:

  • parent support groups;
  • monthly educational seminars;
  • home programming to facilitate generalization of communication
  • academic and behavior programs;
  • respite care; and,
  • registration assistance for DDD.

The counseling team also provides crisis and hospitalization assistance to parents as needed.

During the first week of school, all new parents are invited to the Center for breakfast, an informational talk by administrators, introductions to staff, and a chance to sit in their child's morning circle/meeting activity to meet classroom staff and other students. We strongly encourage parent networking so parents can support one another. Such connections can also facilitate play dates among friends and classmates.

Transition and Recreation Fair

Once a year a Transition and Recreation Fair is held in The Phoenix Center's gymnasium. The Fair is designed for families and the professionals who work with them. This is an excellent resource for learning about a variety of support services available in your county.

Family Night Out

Several times a year we offer Family Night Out, when families can leave their Phoenix Center child with our staff and go out for the evening. Light supper and activities are provided for the children. On Family Night Out, parents may opt to stay at the Center for a Parents' Support Group. Siblings Support Groups are also provided. Additional family opportunities have also included a Family Pasta Night at the Center and a Family Bowling Night at a local bowling alley.

Respite Care

Under extenuating family circumstances, the Center´s social worker may assist families in finding in-home respite care. Financial arrangements are made directly between the staff member and the family.

Partners in Caring

Partners in Caring (PIC) is the Center's home-school association. PIC is an active and involved group of parents whose fund raising efforts enhance the students' program. Each year, this active group sponsors fund raisers to support student assemblies, special classroom items, and the Center's Staff Appreciation Day in May.

Home Visits/Programs

Members of The Phoenix Center's curriculum, communication, and behavior departments regularly visit students' homes to foster generalization of skills from the school to the home environment. Visits which are generally two-hours in duration may be arranged at the request of the parent or staff member. During a visit, Phoenix Center staff members will conduct an environmental assessment of the home to insure maximum learning opportunities. Examples of home interventions include the development of anticipatory calendars, visual picture schedules and behavioral charts which may be introduced to insure carryover.
